Persistence contributor and proud femme Chandra Mayor gave a speech at the SlutWalk recently hosted in her home city of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Here’s an excerpt:
Today, I am here because I stand in solidarity with those who stand outside the circle of society’s definitions of acceptable women. I stand in solidarity with those who struggle with the word “slut.” I stand in solidarity with those who refuse to be silent and complicit any longer, no matter how perfectly or imperfectly they seek to end that complicity. I stand in solidarity with those who believe in finding our own voice, seeking our own truth, learning and unlearning every lie we’ve been told, getting mad as hell, and struggling towards new ways of being in a world that would really prefer that we didn’t, in a world that tries to force us to be good little girls by any means necessary, including shaming, rape, and death. I stand in solidarity with those who believe that waiting to take political action until we know how to perfectly politically engage is a luxury we don’t have.
